VALLEYFIELD, Quebec - Quebec-based driver Pierre Mahau nearly died Friday morning while working on his Unlimited Light boat.
The crane raising the engine broke and it sent a metal part from the cockpit into his throat. He was rushed to the local hospital in Valleyfield, but then transferred immediately to a Montreal hospital because of the gravity of the accident.
Doctors were able to remove the metal piece, but only after placing Mahau in a medically-induced coma where he remains.
In 2005, Mahau won the 2.5 liter class at Valleyfield driving the Super Energex.
