The sight of Enriquez Hernandez limping back onto the court in the fourth quarter Friday morning was hard to believe. After all, the Winlock junior had barely been able to limp off the court under his own power earlier in the contest.
Hernandez's leg had been rolled over by a player midway during the third quarter and the guard had fallen to the ground, screaming. Maybe this was the inspiration Winlock needed, down by double-digits. Think Paul Pierce in the NBA Finals.
Unfortunately, for the Cardinals, there was no magic.
Winlock dropped the boys 2B consolation game to LaConner on Friday morning, 45-31.
LaConner controlled most of the game, using an 11-2 run following halftime to take a 30-11 lead. Spencer Novak, who was held scoreless during the first half after a 13-point game on Thursday, had seven points during the run. Novak finished with a game-high 16 points, seven of which came from the charity stripe.
Even before Hernandez was injured, Winlock struggled from the field. The Cardinals shot a dismal 18.4 percent (9-of-49) from the field.
Before Hernandez re-entered the game, he had his left ankle taped by a trainer. He finished with four points, but did not score after the injury.
LaConner will play the winner of the Northwest Christian and Morton-White Pass game Saturday morning for fourth place.
