Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. - Reporting a crime to authorities is the first step in helping catch criminals.

But how do you know what to report and to whom?

Authorities say they want you to report crime, but we've seen and heard different phone numbers when it comes to how to do that.

Call 911 in case of an emergency if you're in immediate danger or witnessing something happening where you need police right away call 911.

Here in Spokane there's also CrimeCheck. That number is 456-2233.

This is the number to call to make a police report if our car has been broken into, or you've been burglarized.

Now the Spokane police department has brought back it's tip line that's 242-TIPS.

This allows you to help police do their job.

Police officers say the bottom line is that they want to hear from you.

They say they can't do their job unless you call and tell them what's happening in your neighborhood.

Calling 911 will work no matter where you are. CrimeCheck works city and county wide, and the Spokane tip line are for crimes within the city of Spokane.
