KHQ Crime Tracker Kalae Chock Shows How A Pen and 3 Inch Screw Will Help Keep Thieves Out Of Your Home

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. - A locked door secure with a deadbolt isn't always enough to keep thieves out.  The Spokane County Sheriff's Office says thieves are consistently breaking into homes right through the front door with just a kick.  Ron Rogalsky thought his house was safe until crooks broke into his home with a kick to the back door, busting right through the deadbolt and door frame.

After the break-in, KHQ Crime Trackers helped him secure his front and back door with the right deadbolt and proper installation.  Allied Security Locksmith Dave Wambsgans showed Ron the crucial elements that come with a secure door.  It includes a solid wood or metal door, strong frame, and a deadbolt that is installed properly.  Proper installation includes 3 inch screws that hold the strike plate into the frame of the house and a hole big enough for the bolt to fully extend.  Wambsgans says he wouldn't spend less than $50 on a deadbolt and says solid wood and metal doors can cost hundreds more.  However, he says safety is priceless and the investment well worth it.
