Thief Steals Cardboard From Wal-Mart

Posted: Updated:

HAYDEN, Idaho - Thousands of dollars worth of goods were stolen from a Hayden Walmart. The stolen goods however aren't what you would normally think of. The thief didn't make off with  iPad's, TV's, or laptops instead someone stole more than $5,000 worth of cardboard or 22 large bales worth.

When you think of someone stealing cardboard, you might not think much of it but when it adds up to well over $5,000 worth that may get your attention. Authorities are now looking for a cardboard thief and after doing some digging it turns out that cardboard theft can be fairly lucrative. This past summer, three men from New Jersey were arrested for stealing 900 tons of cardboard from a Walmart loading dock. The worth of 900 tons of cardboard? $100,000 dollars.

The surveillance video taken from security cameras at the Hayden Walmart's loading dock shows a man driving a semi, already stacked with cardboard bales, pull into the dock. He then unloads the forklift connected to his truck and starts stacking cardboard on to the flatbed. Recyclers say the only thing really worth money is the large bales of cardboard that retailers like Walmart get rid of. Each bale in this case is worth $150. Investigators say the $5,400 in cardboard was stolen over the course of two weeks in two separate incidents.

If you have information about the truck, suspect, or the incident, you're asked to contact the KCSO.
