SPOKANE, Wash. -
Whitworth took a nosedive in the rankings Monday after losing two games last week.
The Pirates fell from No. 3 to No. 12 in the latest D3Hoops.com Top 25 poll. St. Thomas, a team that beat Whitworth at the start of the season, remained No. 1. Amherst, Middlebury, Illinois Wesleyan and WPI round out the new top five.
Whitworth lost to Whitman last Tuesday and lost at home to George Fox on Saturday – their first back-to-back conference losses since January of 2009. The loss on Tuesday broke the Bucs' 20-game winning streak.
Whitworth closes out the regular season in Oregon this weekend. They play at Linfield on Friday and at Willamette on Saturday. Already assured of at least a share of the NWC title and a top seed in the conference tournament, the Pirates will play for one more win to clinch an outright league title. They can become the first NWC school to win four straight titles since Whitman did it from 1927-30.
