HERMISTON, Ore. - The Umatilla Chemical Agent Disposal Facility has shut down the last operating furnace at the Umatilla Chemical Depot.
The furnace began destroying the Umatilla
Chemical Depot stockpile when GB bomb processing started in September of
2005. Over the past seven years and five months, the furnace has destroyed more than 1 million pounds of chemical agent and processed more than 100,000 munitions.
Nearly 1.5 million pounds of secondary waste were also processed through the furnace since the end of agent operations in late 2011. The last container of secondary waste went through the furnace Friday morning.
Closure work at UMCDF will continue through 2014.
