SPOKANE, Wash. -

The Zags used a tenacious defense from the start to build an early lead against Pepperdine. And they never looked back.

Gonzaga forced the Waves into 20 costly turnovers. Kevin Pangos alone had four steals.

Offensively, Pangos led the way with 14 points, including four 3-pointers.

But it was the play of freshman guard Kyle Dranginis that caught the eye of coach Mark Few and his teammates. Dranginis scored 11 points, hit 3-of-4 from beyond the arc and impressed everyone at McCarthey Athletic Center.

"We all want to see each other successful, and I think that's what's really good about our team," said Dranginis after getting praises in the locker room. "It was just a fun time. I wasn't thinking, I was just playing and trying to make plays."

"Kyle can really play," said Pangos. "He is just relaxing, but at the same time being aggressive. He's got so much talent. We can really use him. He's tall for a guard, he's smart, he can shoot it, he can pass. He does a little bit of everything."
