KENNEWICK, Wash. - Since 1998 thousands of Washington parents have been investing in their children's future college education through the GET Program which stands for Guaranteed Education Tuition. However, a lawmaker in Olympia said they may be getting rid of GET.
Nearly 150,000 GET accounts have opened since the program started 15 years ago and around 30,000 students have used those accounts to go to colleges, universities and technical schools nationwide.
The program, however, has a reported $631 million deficit. State Senator Rodney Tom is the chairman of the legislative GET advisory committee. He said they're not sure exactly how shutting down the program will play out but that legislators are adamant that a promise made is a promise kept.
"Everybody that is currently in the system will get the full benefit of the GET program. We're just going to not take additional entrances or additional dollars," Tom said.
Program administrators believe the chances of the GET program running out of money before it pays for all its participants to go to college are extremely slim.
Senator Tom said GET and tuition legislation will likely be introduced in the coming weeks.
