UNION GAP, Wash. - The Union Gap police department is saying goodbye to "Officer Daisy."
Police officials have decided to cut the city's K9 narcotics unit because of budget concerns.
Chief Greg Cobb says Daisy the dog was called out to just five incidents in 2012 and in each case, officers had already discovered the narcotics. Daisy has been necessary for only one narcotics find in the last three years. The K9 unit was created in 2007.
Cobb says the costs of the unit would be about $50,000 in 2013 because of accommodations for the dog on the job, such as the replacement of a specially equipped vehicle with upgraded compartments and an expensive air-conditioning system.
