YAKIMA, Wash.-- One family in Yakima won't be able to spend their Christmas at home after a fire burned through their house last night.
The fire started around four Monday afternoon on the 1400 block of Hamilton Avenue.
The family living in the house saw smoke coming from behind a dresser in the kids' bedroom. After trying to put it out themselves, the family called 911. They escaped as the fire and smoke started to spread through the inside of the house.
Firefighters arrived a few minutes later and were able to put out the flames.
"(They) were able to save the presents so they're still gonna have a Christmas. The good news is nobody got hurt," said Yakima Fire Captain Joe Riel.
Firefighters said the blaze was started by a faulty power cord to a small Christmas tree. They say it had been caught in a drawer slide and pinched too tightly.
Crews estimate the damage at $70,000. The inside of the house is currently unlivable, so the family is spending the rest of their holiday with a relative.
