KENNEWICK, Wash. - Westgate Elementary School now has the money to buy iPads for a school reading program.
Thanks to a $1,000 grant from Walmart, the school will buy two iPads and applications to support the school's Walk to Read program. It's an intensive program that focuses on helping third grade students, who are not reading at grade level, catch up.
The Kennewick School District says 90% of the students at Westgate elementary are eligible for free or reduced lunch, with more than 20 different languages spoken in students' homes, yet the school ranks between 85th and 90th percentile on the national measures of academic performance test for achieving student growth in third grade reading.
