TILLAMOOK, Ore. - While on a field trip Wednesday to see "The Hobbit", a student found a loaded handgun at a Tillamook movie theater on the floor beneath a seat.
Police said the gun was a small, semi-automatic weapon with a round in the chamber and the safety off. They say if the student had picked up the gun and squeezed the trigger, "it could have been catastrophic."
Instead, the student notified adults. Officers then cleared the theater and searched it.
Police said they do not believe that the weapon was brought by a student or that it had been stashed. They believe somebody accidentally left it behind.
Officers are working with federal agents to try to trace the owner.
