KENNEWICK, Wash. - How long would it take to build more than a thousand bicycles? Well, not very long when a couple hundred people are putting them together.
Volunteers and students from four local high schools gathered at the Benton County Fairgrounds Friday to assemble 1,100 bikes. The Local 598 Pipefitters Union donated the two-wheeled toys for the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots program.
"There's probably nothing better than a kid's first set of wheels, their first bike. These are mostly small bikes for first timers. Hopefully, you know, they will last more than a year," said Bikes for Tikes co-founder Randy Walli.
In addition to the 1,100 bikes there are 1,100 helmets. The Toys for Tots giveaway is Saturday.
