Kennewick Thrift Store Helping Families Buy Headstones

KENNEWICK, Wash. -- A Tri-Cities thrift shop has reopened its doors, and is renewing its unique promise.

The Shop and Drop thrift store sells items that people have forgotten about, to make sure others are always remembered.

"I'm doing something that no ones ever did, and I'm helping people get headstones that can't afford them," said Owner Dianne Trenidad.

Trenidad says this is her calling, and after a few years of hard work and donated items from the community, she's able to use the store's proceeds to make a difference for the deceased.

"That's a person. I think everybody that's lived and died should be remembered and left some impact on someone's life, but not everybody gets one," she said.

Hillcrest Memorial Center Owner Blaze Titus says he's never heard of anyone wanting to help this cause, and in turn, he's wants to help her.

"I'm willing to sell headstones at cost to help her,  so that her money can go farther, to do better for the community," Titus said.

And helping make sure that a loved one stays alive in the hearts of family and friends.

"You know, then you walk through a cemetery, and you see a person's headstones and you know that person, you have a rush of good memories of that person. So, what a neat thing this is going to be -- to be able to have marked graves now so people can have that rush of memories of that person," he said.

The store has already received a donation that will cover the cost of the first headstone.
Trenidad said if you know of a family that could use the donation, you can come down to the store located at 3180 W. Clearwater Ave. in Kennewick and let her know. People can also donate items to the store.
