Early morning accident kills man on I-82

Posted: Updated:

NEAR UNION GAP, Wash.-- A man is dead after a semi truck hit him in the roadway on I-82 early this morning.

The Washington State Patrol says 20-year-old Charles Robertson of Yakima had been involved in another accident a short time before.

Troopers say he crashed his car off Ragan Road and into an apple orchard.

About 2:45 am, Robertson ended up walking in the roadway on I-82 near Exit 40 about two miles south of Union Gap, in the path of a semi truck.

Troopers say the truck driver didn't know what he had hit at first.

"He was trying to determine what he had struck when he called us... He got back to the scene, yes, and notified us and that's what got us to respond to the scene," said Washington State Patrol Sergeant Greg Tri.

The state patrol says they still don't know why the victim ended up in the roadway or how he crashed his car. They're still investigating.
