Local blood drives asking for donations to help East Coast

RICHLAND, Wash. - People around the country are being asked to step up and donate blood for those affected by Hurricane Sandy.

The storm's wrath has forced the American Red Cross to shut down hundreds of blood drives along the East Coast. The organization is losing three thousand units of blood each day it's closed; that's enough to help ten thousand people

"Every day that it's down, cancer patients don't take that day off. Their needs don't take that time off, so the need for blood and platelet donations are strengthened during this time," said Donor Recruitment Supervisor Robert Krug.

Krug says they aren't sure how long the East Coast blood drives will be affected. To find out more about how you can help, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-787-9691.
