PASCO, Wash. - While some tweens and teenagers may have to be drug out of bed to go to school, parents with kids at Stevens Middle School in Pasco probably aren't having that problem - at least on Fridays.
FIT Fridays - FIT stands for Friday Is Terrific - have been around for awhile at the school
"We've generally done it during lunchtime so we've really extended our FIT Fridays to include the morning which was what you saw today and also to include our positive student behavior campaign," said Principal Carla Lobos.
Teachers and sometimes even staff from the Pasco School District Administration office greet every student with high fives and cheering as they arrive on Fridays. Then they have music blaring through the halls or in the courtyard before the first bell. This Friday, Pasco High's drum line was on hand.
"The staff loves it, the kids love it. Even today we had several parents," Lobos said.
"I think it's really fun because I get an opportunity to go play with other kids and make them feel like they're welcome in the school," said student Andrew Aung.
Lobos said they'll be continuing this new Friday morning traditions because it's been so popular and it really does seem to boost students' morale.
"We actually survey our kids to talk to them about how they feel about the school. What is it that they would like to build community and school spirit and one of the things that they constantly bring up is that they love the Friday morning FITs and we do something very similar at lunchtime, as well," Lobos said.
About 600 cups of hot cocoa were passed out this Friday and when the courtyard cleared out at first bell not a single Styrofoam cup was left on the ground. Further proof that what they're doing at Stevens Middle School is working.
