MOSCOW, Idaho -

So the Vandals finally got their first win of the season. And what a win it was, beating New Mexico State 26-18.

The Vandal defense came up big, notching two interceptions, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and three sacks. Coach Robb Akey said it was that big ‘D' that helped secure the victory. That, and what he calls "sudden changes".

"Certainly we want to take better care of the football, but win the sudden change scenario!" said Akey. "If we have a turnover ball – and unfortunately we did – but our defense responded to that pretty well. When we got the free possession – the takeaway – the offense being able to get points out of that, I think we got that every time."

The Vandals also got good help from senior kicker Trey Farquhar, who was chosen as the Placekicker of the Week by College Football Performance Awards, as well as the WAC Special Teams Player of the Week. He kicked four field goals and made two PATs.
