Two days of golf culminated Oct. 6 as the female field in the EWGA Championship Final hit the final shots and brought the 17th-annual event to a close.

The field comprised amateur golfers who made it through 130 local qualifying events, 15 regional tournaments and 36 holes on the gorgeous Palmer and Squire courses at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens. Nearly 2,500 women took part in the event.

Pam Swensen, president and CEO of the EWGA, said the two days of “fierce” competition offered lots of excitement.

The lead-up to the national event began in June, when individual chapters from all over the United States staged their own championships. All players were then categorized according to the USGA Handicap Index. Once the field was formed, the women competed in two formats -- stroke and scramble play.

In attendance at the championship event was LPGA Tour legend Michelle McGann, who used to live in one of the beautiful homes for sale on Singer Island and now lives in West Palm Beach. McGann serves as the national ambassador for the EWGA Fairway Friends program, a mentoring program that pairs experienced golfers with beginners.

The EWGA, an acronym for Executive Women’s Golf Association, is a nonprofit organization whose goal is to bring together like-minded women to build upon their self-esteem, business skills and positive thinking. It was founded in 1991 in Palm Beach Gardens.

What is unique about EWGA is that it involves professional leaders and corporate achievers in a sport that is more mental than physical.

PGA National, a sprawling community of Palm Beach Gardens homes for sale in the heart of the city, welcomed the EWGA women in signature South Florida style. The development also is the site of The Honda Classic every year, as well as several other sporting, celebrity and philanthropic events.
