The Chiefs raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first period and held on late as they doubled up the Lethbridge Hurricanes 4-2 in front of 5,342 fans at the Spokane Arena on Saturday night. Eric Williams turned away 25 shots and Mitch Holmberg chipped in his third goal in two games as Spokane improved to 4-1-0-0.
The Chiefs got on the board in the first with an unassisted top shelf goal from team scoring leader Holmberg at 11:47. The goal was Holmberg's seventh of the season and fifth in three home games. Todd Fiddler added to the Chiefs lead with a power play score at the 14:07 mark on assists from Jason Fram and Tanner Mort.
Spokane's advantage swelled to three goals when Collin Valcourt fired a shot into the back of the net at 16:33 with assists from Reid Gow and Brenden Kichton. Lethbridge got their first goal just nine-seconds later on a shot from winger Jaimen Yakubowski to cap the first period scoring with Spokane leading 3-1.
Despite recording 14 more shots than the Hurricanes in the second period (19-5), the Chiefs failed to capitalize with a goal. Lethbridge cut the Spokane lead to 3-2 with a shorthanded goal from Remi Laurencelle at 8:25. Hurricanes netminder Ty Rimmer was a perfect 19 of 19 on save opportunities in the period.
The game was up for grabs late in the third period with the Chiefs leading by just one, but Williams recorded a brilliant save at the 15:22 mark to maintain Spokane's advantage. Tanner Mort put the game out of reach with a goal at 15:38 on assists from Fiddler and Mike Aviani.
Williams finished the night 25 of 27 on save opportunities while Rimmer was 35 of 39 for Lethbridge. The Chiefs were two of four on the power play and three for three on penalty kills.
The Chiefs travel to Kelowna on Wednesday for a 7:05 pm matchup with the Rockets and Kamloops on Friday for a 7:00 pm game against the Blazers. Spokane returns home on Saturday for their only home matchup of the year with Vancouver at 7:05 pm on Leinenkugel's Hocktoberfest.
