Spokane legend Ryne Sandberg has a new job. Instead of managing the triple-A team in Lehigh Valley, like he has for the past two seasons, he will be the third base coach and infield instructor for the Philadelphia Phillies.
The announcement was made Thursday, as the Phillies named several new position changes for next year.
Sandberg tried to manage in the big leagues last year, interviewing for the head job in St. Louis. According to the Phillies, he could still interview for managerial openings this winter if he so chooses.
Sandberg, from Spokane's North Central High School, was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2005 after a successful career with both the Phillies and the Chicago Cubs.
