PENDLETON, Ore. -- Umatilla County Deputies are investigating why an elderly Pendleton man was walking near train tracks Monday afternoon when he was struck and killed by a train.
It happened around 12:30 PM on Cunningham Road, about six miles West of Pendleton.
Deputies say 81-year old Clayton "Bud" Skillman was standing on the tracks when a train engineer tried to blow an alert whistle to warn him, but he wasn't able to get off the tracks in time.
"There's no fence or anything keeping people off the tracks. It's private property owned by the rail roads,They're not supposed to be walking on the tracks but there's nothing as far as any physical barrier or anything to keep them off," says Sgt. Tawin Compton with the Umatilla Sheriff's office.
Deputies say Skillman lived near the area. They're investigating why he was walking along the tracks in the first place.
