Wenas Fire 100% Contained

Update: The Wenas Fire is now 100% contained as of Sunday evening. Crews say the fire burned a total of 1,600 acres and damaged two outbuildings. The cause of the fire is still unknown.

 

YAKIMA COUNTY, Wash. -- The Wenas Fire, located near Wenas Lake is now 30% and an estimated 960 acres have burned.

Approximately 30 homes, north of the intersection of N. Wenas road and Longmire Ln., have been evacuated. North Wenas road is closed to traffic beyond this point. The fire is burning in grass and sage brush. Nine aircraft, including four helicopters, three water tenders, one air attack unit and one lead plane are assigned to the fire. Four bulldozers are being used on the east and west perimeters of to flank the fire with the hope of containing it between the road and Lake Wenas.

Firefighters from Yakima County, Kittitas County, Department of Natural Resources and the US Forest Service are fighting the blaze. The cause of the fire is undetermined.
