Union Gap, WASH.--The City of Union Gap quickly responded to a hazardous materials incident Saturday night.
Around 10 p.m. a call came in that a strange odor was coming from Colombia Valley Fruits.
The City Administrator said a pressurized pipeline was allowing ammonia to escape. They immediately shut down surrounding roads and asked two homeowners to evacuate.
"We were very aware of it," said City Administrator Chris Jensen. "We responded quickly. The facility itself responded quickly, and we were able to mitigate it without any further incident, which is good."
The city called in a regional team to help secure the leak, which was fixed around 2 a.m. Sunday.
Contractors will be evaluating the system to determine what happened and how to prevent it from ever happening again.
