Yakima, WASH.--A backpack giveaway in Yakima had people lining up around the block at 4 a.m. Saturday.
MorningStar Church gave away 5,000 backpacks filled with school supplies.
The pastor said they gave out 1,500 backpacks last year and they were gone in nearly 20 minutes. So this year, they decided to more than double their amount.
He said the congregation donated $20,000, and other local businesses contributed $20 more thousand for the supplies.
Frances Garza, a parent, said, "When you have four kids like I do it can really add up, and every year it seems like it's getting more expensive to go and buy everything that they need. What they're requiring in school now is not like it used to be so I'm really appreciative of this event."
The pastor said the event is a way to give back to the community and make the transition into the school year a little bit easier.
