RICHLAND, Wash. - The State of Washington has fined the U.S. Department of Energy $5,000 for missing a deadline with Hanford.
The state sued the DOE in 2008 for missing deadlines to empty the tanks of underground waste that could potentially leak, and to complete construction of a massive waste treatment plant
That lawsuit was settled in 2010 with new deadlines, the fine was for missing one of them. This deadline is the first missed since the settlement was agreed on.
The Energy Department announced last month that it would delay a new cost and schedule for the plant until technical problems can be resolved.
