YAKIMA, Wash.-- A gas leak in Yakima this morning forced firefighters to evacuate over one hundred people in the area of 19th Avenue and Tieton Drive.
City crews were repairing a water main, when they hit a two-inch natural gas line. Firefighters were called in at around 7:30 to close off the area. They also moved people out of the surrounding block, including summer school students at Franklin Middle School.
"You know, people that are doing any type of construction work... Either they may hit a line or a line may rupture at some point. Yes, it is a common occurrence... However, we have to take every precaution necessary in order to provide for the sake of our community first," says Yakima Fire Captain Brandon Dorenbush.
Firefighters also blocked off Tieton Drive for about a half an hour as a precaution. Crews from Cascade Natural Gas managed to cap the line at about 8:30.
