RICHLAND, WA- The Secretary of Energy says Hanford clean up must be completed, but Steven Chu says not at the expense of worker safety.
Nearly 1,000 Hanford workers came to Howard Amon Park Friday morning to hear Secretary Chu assure them that they will always be protected.
"Our workers are our biggest asset," Chu says. "Whether you're a fed or a contractor, we don't really care. You're all part of the DOE family."
Chu says construction of the vitrification plant will move forward once the DOE is confident it can be completed and operated safely.
Chu visited Hanford Thursday and Friday before returning to Washington, D.C.
