Visitors may get a look inside Mt. St. Helens crater

Posted: Updated:

VANCOUVER, Wash. Visitors to Mt. St. Helens may soon get to look inside the volcano's crater.

The Forest Service is considering adding two campgrounds and two trails at Mount St. Helens, including a new climbing route on the north side of the volcano to give hikers a look into the crater.

The National Volcanic Monument may start the environmental review this summer for a trail reaching the 6,800-foot rim on the northeast side.

The second trail would begin near Ape Cave and climb to a viewpoint.

Possible locations for two campgrounds are being studied near the Science and Learning Center at Coldwater. The Forest Service hopes new campgrounds would support longer stays for education programs.
