YAKIMA, Wash.-- The Yakima Police Department's "Explorers" received a big award Wednesday.
They were voted Explorer post of the year in Washington state.
They're made up of about 15 people, from 16 to 21 years old.
It's a way for YPD to give young people the opportunity to learn more about law enforcement and work closely with officers.
Some explorers say the program has been a great experience.
"Now that I've been in Explorers for about three years, I want to get more into law enforcement. Hopefully one day become a police officer," said Explorer, Tim Jongeward.
Explorers do everything from security for events, to traffic control for local parades. Several current YPD officers went through the program when they were younger and say it helped expose them to what being a police officer was all about.
