PULLMAN, Wash. -
Glenn Johnson, the voice of the Cougars at Martin Stadium, was the first featured guest on KHQ's Golf Week on KHQ Local News Today on Tuesday.
Johnson, who is the Mayor of Pullman and a professor of Communications at WSU, joined Matt Rogers on WSU's Palouse Ridge Golf Course along with head pro Jeremy Wexler. It was on the course's signature hole, No. 10, that he said he would begin "phased retirement" in fall. He will still teach a management class at the university, but he will not teach the TV News class.
Rogers and Johnson talked about Johnson's golf game, why he got into politics and how be became the Voice of the Cougs – the P.A. announcer for WSU football games.
"They wanted more consistency, they just had students doing it and every year they had a change," said Johnson. "So, believe me, they've had consistency whether it's good or bad. We've been doing it since 1980."
Johnson said the hire of Athletic Director Bill Moos and the subsequent hire of football coach Mike Leach were fantastic hires.
And after all the talk, Johnson, in a walking boot, stepped right up and nearly hit a birdie to finish off the tenth hole.
Here is what is coming up the rest of the week on KHQ Local News Today:
Wednesday: A golf pro
Thursday: A coach
Friday: A commander
