SEATTLE, Wash. - A federal jury has awarded $485,000 in damages to a Washington National Guard sergeant who says she was fired because of her military service.
The jury found Catholic Community Services violated state and federal law in discriminating against Grace Campbell. Jurors say the charity wrongly fired Campbell after learning she would deploy to Iraq in 2008.
In a statement, Catholic Community Services says Campbell's termination was not related to her deployments. The agency says she was fired because she violated agency and client confidentiality policies.
Campbell worked for Catholic Community Services for a decade. She served with the National Guard for 23 years before retiring in 2011.
