Educators say school district name fails to make the grade

Posted: Updated:

MEDFORD, Ore.- The Phoenix-Talent School board thinks a name change will help retain students.

Officials think the Phoenix-Talent name is too limiting.

Under a new state open enrollment law, parents can transfer their children to the neighboring Ashland School District. Administrators at Phoenix-Talent say they lost 54 students this year, which amounts to more than $300,000 in state funding.

Students, parents, and others will vote on the name change this month. The four choices are Rogue South, South Valley, South Rogue and South Rogue Valley.
