No motive in Yakima murder-suicide

YAKIMA, Wash.-- Yakima police say they still don't know why a man killed his mother-in-law, then turned the gun on himself.

They say Angel Cardenas-Contreras, 30, shot and killed Rita Contreras-Birrveta, 53, last Friday at a home on the 1400 block of South 40th Avenue.

Police have not figured out why Cardenas-Contreras killed the woman, but they are closing the case.

"Everyone wants a response or an answer in a serious crime. But sometimes there just isn't a motive, or there isn't motive that maybe makes sense to the general public," said Lt. Mike Merryman with YPD.

There were several family members at the home when the killing occurred and police interviewed most of the family, but say they could not gather any evidence to show a motive.
