Stolen car ditched in river

Posted: Updated:

Sheriffs say someone stole a Jeep Cherokee, and ditched it in the Columbia River.

The car was reported stolen in Kennewick around 11 p.m. Wednesday and was found around 1:30 a.m. Thursday in the river by Hover Park in Finley.

A train conductor saw the headlights in the water as he passed by and called 911.

Rescue crews say they saw no signs of anyone around the jeep.

"Our first responsibility is for life safety to make sure no one is in the vehicle, or around the vehicle injured. First thing we do is sweep the land and around the water with flashlights," says Benton County Fire District 1 Chief Mike Harris.

Sheriffs say it's possible the thieves took the car for a joy ride, and dumped it after they had their fun.
