KENNEWICK, Wash.-- Police offered their Annual Identity Theft Shred Day in the Tri-Cities Saturday.
It was put on by the Tri-Cities Crime Stoppers. More than a thousand people brought papers containing personal information to be shredded at both the kennewick and Richland Target parking lots.
Kennewick Police Crime Prevention Specialist, Mike Blatman, said it's pretty easy to become a victim of identity theft.
"If somebody gets that information, they can use it to start writing other checks, take advantage, taking over other accounts. All those things that make it easy for people to be able to take your identity," said Blatman.
Blatman pointed out that after tax day people start getting rid of documents, but need to remember to shred them instead of just throwing them in the garbage.
