YAKIMA, Wash.-- Opening arguments started today in the trial of a Yakima man accused of murder for his role in the death of a teacher's aide.
Prosecutors say Ivan Izazaga mistook 24-year-old Yecenia Guererro's car for a rival's back in June. They say he pointed her car out to his friend, Lucio Rivera, who fired several shots, killing Guererro.
The defense claims the shooter acted on his own.
"In fact, he tried to prevent it... But he has to stand trial," says Defense Attorney Rick Smith.
"This is a case about a woman who was shot and killed. A young woman shot and killed by the actions of this man," says Prosecuting Attorney Gary Hintze.
Police are still looking for Rivera. They think he's hiding in either Arizona or Mexico.
