Impact state budget has on the disabled

Posted: Updated:

RICHLAND, Wash. -- The state legislature passed a budget deal this week that addresses a nearly half-billion dollar shortfall.

Many state programs for the disabled faced the potential of funding cuts, but most were spared in the final budget plan.

That includes programs for the disabled.

The Arc of the Tri-Cities works with developmentally disabled people and say while they didn't see cuts, they're not celebrating.

"I'm concerned right now. Because even though the budget has flat lined for us, our expenses continue to grow," explains Judy Westsik, executive director of The Arc of Tri-Cities.

One reason for the growing expenses is the companies payroll as well as programs like their employment training for the disabled.

Currently The Arc gets more than a  $250,000.00 from the state. The rest comes from non-profits and donations.
