BANDA ACEH, Indonesia (AP) - There are no signs of deadly waves or serious damage after two massive earthquakes off the coast of Indonesia. And the tsunami watch issued for much of the Indian Ocean has been lifted.
But people along the coast are still fleeing for higher ground because of memories of a 2004 tsunami that killed 170,000 in one province alone.
A British seismologist says he feared the worst when heard about the 8.6-magnitude earthquake, but he felt better after hearing what type of quake it was.
Experts say the first tremor was a strike-slip, not a mega thrust quake. In a strike slip quake, the earth moves horizontally rather than vertically and doesn't displace large volumes of water. A mega thrust sends towering waves racing toward shore.
