McKenna promotes free services for struggling homeowners

Posted: Updated:

Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna was in Kennewick Monday to raise awareness for struggling homeowners.

He stopped at the Consumer Credit Counseling Services building.

McKenna says the U.S. Supreme Court's national mortgage settlement can help people facing foreclosure.

He says even though the Tri-Cities housing market is strong compared to most places, many could benefit from free resources.

"The Tri-Cities aren't as bad as that, because housing kept their value more. But even here there's been somewhat of a downturn. If that comes with someone losing a job or having their hours cut back they can suddenly find themselves in a lot of trouble."

He says if you face foreclosure stay in your home and gather your financial documents, request mediation, and contact your lender. Also, look for free counseling, and avoid scammers asking for a fee.

The counseling center McKenna spoke at is just north of Clearwater Avenue on Morain Street in Kennewick.
