PASCO, Wash. -- In light of last year's nuclear disaster in Japan, the National Regulatory Committee is asking Energy Northwest to implement seven changes over the next five years at the Columbia Generating Station North of Richland.
The nuclear facility will need to spend at least $30 million to fulfill the safety requirements dealing with issues like power outages, flooding, and earthquakes.
Energy Northwest believes it can absorb the costs without passing them on to customers. "At this point we are not anticipating there will be any rate increases or impacts due to that but we'll have to evaluate the budgets going forward as directions from the NRC come out," says Greg Cullen, the Assistant to the Chief Nuclear Officer.
Energy Northwest will not get the exact details on the changes they must make until March. Those specifications will determine how much they have to spend to stay in compliance.
