RICHLAND, Wash. -- The Department of Energy has scheduled tour dates for the Hanford Site and historic B-Reactor.
Hanford Site Tours
Hanford's sitewide tours begin at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. on the following dates: April 12, 13, 14, and 27; May 10, 11, 12, 24, 25, and 26; June 7, 8, 9, 21, 22, and 23; July 19, 20, and 21; August 2, 3, 4, 16, 17, 30, and 31; and September 1, 20, 21, and 22.
Registration for the sitewide tours begins at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, March 8. This is a driving tour of the Hanford Site, including stops at the historic B Reactor and environmental cleanup projects. All tour slots are filled on a first-come, first served basis through the online registration system found on the Hanford website Hanford Tour Page or by visiting www.hanford.gov. Tour participants must be U.S. citizens and at least 18 years of age.
B Reactor Tours
Tours that focus specifically on the historic B Reactor are slated for April 5, 6, 19, 20, and 23; May 3, 4, 7, 17, 18, 21, and 31; June 1, 4, 14, 15, 18, 28, and 29; July 2, 12, 13, 16, 26, 27, and 30; August 9, 10, 13, 23, 24, and 27; September 6, 7, 10, 24, 27, and 28. The registration opens at 12:01 a.m. on March 15.
The weekday B Reactor tours will begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays using a 43-seat bus. Visitors may register online, obtain a seat on a walk-in basis, or call in to reserve a space. The Saturday B Reactor tours will begin at 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. using a 43-seat bus. Online registration for all B Reactor tours will be available at http://manhattanprojectbreactor.hanford.gov/ .
The B Reactor visits allow the public to see firsthand this National Historic Landmark – the world's first full-scale plutonium production reactor. Visitors will spend two full hours at the reactor. Visitors must be 18 years old to visit, but do not have to be U.S. citizens.
All tours begin and end at the Tri-Cities Enterprise Center at 2000 Logston Blvd. in Richland, off Hwy. 240. Both public tours are free to the public.
B Reactor visits are separate from the Hanford Site Public Tours that take five hours and give visitors an opportunity to see cleanup activities at several locations on the 586-square-mile Hanford Site. The sitewide tours also include a 1 hour-and-15-minute stop at the B Reactor.
