KENNEWICK, Wash.— A family is in mourning over the death of 11-year-old Cameron Hartwell.
Cameron died Wednesday at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane after slipping under the surface of the Columbia River Tuesday in Pasco.
Cameron's Aunt, Susie Hulse, came to us to share what kind of boy Cameron was. She says he was very shy but was recently coming out of his shell. He had a girlfriend, liked to dress-up like Spiderman and play with his 8 brothers and sisters. But today his family is missing him.
Susie says Cameron went to the water Tuesday with his younger brother and a friend. Cameron went closer to the water than other boys and stepped in shallow water. Susie says he fell in with his cowboy boots and clothes. She believes milfoil pulled him under for 30 minutes until Dive Rescue could pull him out. Officials haven't said whether milfoil is to blame.
Cameron was taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane where he died hours later. Susie says the family was with him when he passed.
"The thing that made me feel really peaceful, and I think everybody else too, was that when you looked at him and he had a smile on his face and it was like I'm ok," says Susie Hulse.
Susie tells us the family is still in shock. They are now planning Cameron's funeral. If you want to help with the expenses the family has set up a foundation at Baker Boyer Bank in Walla Walla and Tri Cities.
