Burglars target remote homes in Benton City and Prosser

Posted: Updated:

PROSSER, Wash. --  A warning to residents living in remote areas of Prosser and Benton City.  Thieves have been breaking into homes and burglarizing them.

Lt. Joe Lusignan from the Benton County Sheriff's Office says, " They knock on your door, and if you're home they'll ask for directions or say they're looking for work.  But if no one answers the door, they'll break in.  They take anything from equipment, to laptops to cash."

He says in the last year this problem has gotten worse.  "In the first six months of 2009, there were 48 burglaries in the Western part of the county.  The first six months of this year, there were 58 break ins.  That's quite a jump considering the size of the county."

He says there are things to do to get these guys. "Get a license plate, a description of a vehicle, description of the people that come up to the door asking for work or you've lived at a residence for a long time and somebody walks up and asks if somebody else lives there...that type of thing.," says Lusignan.

If you have seen any suspicious activity give Benton County Sheriff's Office a call 509-628-0333.
