Suspects shoot at YSO deputy

Posted: Updated:

WEST OF TOPPENISH--For the third time in the past nine months, a Yakima County Sheriff's Deputy is shot at in the line of duty.

Shortly after midnight Saturday, a deputy responded to a call on the 200 block of Willowtree Lane just outside of Toppenish.  The deputy found a suspicious vehicle slowly circling the block.  When he tried to stop the car, two people leaned out of the car and began shooting at him.

The deputy, whose name was not released, swerved away from the bullets while the suspect car sped off.  Suspects continued firing rounds as the car drove away.

Sgt. Robert Udell with the Sheriff's Office told KNDO he and other officers are fed up.

"They're taking a shot at our community!" Udell said.  "When you're going after a police officer, it's a direct shot towards our whole valley."  Udell said the action indicates these suspects "are not going to follow the rules, and don't care who gets hurt."

Fortunately, the deputy was not hurt.  His name was not released.

Near 1:00 a.m. Saturday, police found the suspect car on Harrah Road.  Police believe the suspects set fire to the car and left.  Deputies say the car was a 2001 Chevrolet Malibu registered out of Toppenish.

Udell said YSO has some "very good leads" on the suspects, but as of 5:00 p.m. Saturday no arrests had been made.

The Sheriff's Office did not say how many shots were fired; they are still investigating the incident.

Deputies believe the shooting is gang-related.  Anyone with information is asked to call YSO at 509-574-2500.
