Senate passes bill to boost funds for higher education

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash. - The Senate passes a bill to help increase state funding for your child's education. The Senate passed Senate Bill 6409, 35-13 and its now on its way to the House of Representatives.

The bill is modeled after an approach that has boosted funding for higher education in other states, such as Georgia and Arkansas. If passed, it would give all lottery revenues to higher education without undercutting support for K-12 education.

Senator Jim Kastama says this would generate more than four times the revenue. He says it would give Washington $586 million annually which is $456 million more than what the lottery generates today.

A small portion of the revenue would be given to pre-school education. The bill now moves on to the House of Representatives.
