KENNEWICK, Wash.-- AMIC, or the Advanced Medical Isotope Corporation make a special dye for a very special machine that detects cancer. But here's the catch, the dye is only good for two hours; and if there's no airport next door, it could mean big changes for their expansion.
AMICcurrently serves oncology at Kadlec and the Tri-Cities Cancer Center. But their long term plans include more of eastern Washington, and in order to get the volatile isotope to Yakima or Spokane, they'd need to use a plane.
It's why they built next to Vista Field, and they want it to stay.
Just like neighbor Cadwell Labratories, they've been actively campaigning to keep Vista Field an airport. But even after today's port of Kennewick meeting; their fate, and the airports, are still up in the air.
Today, Port of Kennewick commissioners met to look over two studies; the details of an 8 million dollar deconstruction project and the impact it would have on local business like AMIC, they won't make a final decision until early march.
