Parents accountable for children's graffiti in Oregon

Posted: Updated:

HERMISTON, Oregon;-- For years, children in Oregon have had to answer to police and their parents when caught spreading graffiti.

It's a long standing law in Oregon called the failure to supervise a child law. It holds parents accountable for their children's crimes.

Police say a child under the age of 15, if cited for tagging property can expect their parents to pay the price as well. It seems the law would cause tagging to go down in the area but sergeants say that isn't always the case.

"I have not seen a big decrease," Oregon State Police sergeant Seth Cooney said. "There are particular areas where you see more graffiti depending on gangs. I think that's where our primary graffiti comes from."

Sergeant Cooney says because they've seen more gangs come into the area in recent years, even with the law, graffiti is still as common as ever.
