TACOMA, Wash. -- Tri-Cities Prep senior quarterback Will
Hoppes threw for 10 touchdowns and rushed for another, leading his
team to the state Class 1B championship Friday night in an 80-40
triumph over Lummi.
It was the first state championship for Tri-Cities Prep (11-2).
The 80 points scored by the winner breaks the previous 1B
championship game record of 76, set by Pateros in 1995.
Hoppes completed 27 of 33 attempts for 552 yards, completing
passes to four different receivers. He also had an interception on
defense.
The 6-foot, 185-pound senior holds the state's all-time 1B
record for passing yards (9,985), total yards (12,637), passing
touchdowns (132), single-game total yards (756) and single-game
passing yards (639).
Tri-Cities Prep junior receiver Troy Redmann had six touchdown
receptions, finishing with nine catches for 239 yards.
The Jaguars scored on their second offensive play of the game as
Hoppes hit a streaking Redmann with a 61-yard touchdown pass with 7
minutes, 19 seconds left in the first quarter. Lummi (10-4)
answered on the Jaguars' ensuing possession when Kyle Finkbonner
scooped up a Hoppes' fumble and returned it 10 yards for a
touchdown. But that was the lone mistake Hoppes made all night.
Hoppes threw four more touchdown passes in the half, including a
39-yard strike to Antonio Ledesma with 8 seconds left as the
Jaguars led 38-20.
On the second play of the second half, Hoppes found Redmann with
another touchdown pass, this one a 58-yard strike.
Lummi shot back as David James caught a 13-yard pass from Titan
Jameson, but the Jaguars answered as Hoppes found Antonio Ledesma
with an 8-yard touchdown pass, making it 52-26 after a successful
two-point conversion.
Ledesma finished with 10 receptions for 153 yards and three
touchdowns.
